纽约研究者发现，吸烟可能激活脂肪分解的基因，这个名叫AZGP1基因在脂肪分解和控制体重的重要作用。这也许正是烟民比不吸烟者的体重轻和为什么烟民在戒烟后发福的一个可能的原因。
　　但是，这个并不意味着戒烟后体重的增加是仅仅由一个基因引起的。吸烟与体重的关系毫无疑问是复杂的，可能还涉及到其他，比如饮食和运动。有关这个问题的另外一个解释是，烟民戒烟后胃口开始增加，同时尼古丁让新陈代谢变慢。
